Silver Nutmeg Graters

Used primarily to grate nutmeg seeds, nutmeg graters may also have a storage compartment in which to keep the seed for further grating at a later time. The demand for nutmeg graters came about with the popularity of punch in the seventeenth century, with it then becoming fashionable in the eighteenth century for gentlemen to carry a grater to add fresh nutmeg to the punch, which enhanced the drink’s taste. Nutmeg graters are also used today by bartenders, who use them to add nutmeg to alcoholic drinks such as eggnog and hot toddy. Steppes Hill Farm Antiques specialises in eighteenth and nineteenth century antique silver nutmeg graters, and will gladly offer advice on the buying and collecting of any collectible item.
