Victorian Silver 'Singing Foxes' Wine Label 'Port'

Rawlings & Summers, London 1843
Photo 1 of 9

A rare Victorian die-stamped silver Wine Label of pierced shaped rectangular form decorated with scrolls, vine leaves and grapes and with a seated fox at either end of the shaped name plate pierced for Port.

By Charles Rawlings & William Summers, London, 1843

This design has become known as the ""Singing Foxes"" by Collectors, but it is more likely that the design inspiration was taken from Aesop's Fable of the Fox and the Grapes. See photograph of a wooden panel from an 18th century American chest of drawers, known as the ""Fox and Grapes Chest of Drawers"".
