Victorian Silver Decanter Label 'Danby String Band' Historic Yorkshire Interest

A most unusual presentation Victorian silver wine label. Unusually it doesn’t carry the name of a wine. Instead, it is a rare presentation label. It bears the inscription ‘From the / DANBY STRING BAND / To W. Walker Esqr / in acknowledgement /of his liberal aid’. This message is finely engraved in several different fonts and blackened to stand out. Mr Walker could hang this decorative label on one of his decanters to proclaim his support for a local activity.

There is a Yorkshire connection as the origins of the label can be traced to the village of Danby, in Eskdale on the Yorkshire moors. W. Walker Esq was William Walker who lived at Ainthorpe House, Ainthorpe, which is a part of Danby. The Walker family were farmers who had lived in the parish and owned property there from the early 18th century.
