Victorian Silver & Enamel Vesta Case Royal Largs Yacht Club

Sampson Mordan, London 1886
Photo 1 of 16

A good Victorian silver and enamel Vesta Case of plain rectangular form with flat-top hinged lid, the face enameled with two crossed flags. One is the Burgee of the Royal Largs Yacht Club and the other is probably a private owners racing flag. The reverse engraved with a contemporary monogram and dated 25th March 1887.

By Sampson Mordan, London, 1886.

The racing flag is possibly that of J Stewart Clark of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Businessman and politician. He became Deputy Lord Lieutenant in the County of Renfrewshire, was a Member of Parliament for Paisley and was respected for being a great philanthropist. He was a prominent member of several Clyde yacht clubs at the time and owned a series of yachts including ‘Rona’ in 1887.

The Vesta was probably given as a Yacht Racing / Regatta prize.
