Victorian Silver & Enamel Perpetual Calendar Calling Card Vesta Case

A rare Victorian silver and enamel combined Vesta Case and Perpetual Calendar, of rectangular form with two hinged lids, the face enamelled with the days of the month, a revolving barrel in the top compartment to set the days of the week. The reverse enamelled with a calling card for Thomas H Thwaites, Sharples, Nr Bolton.

Thomas H THWAITES (1776-1831) of Watermillock House, Astley Bridge, Bolton was a Master Bleacher. Son of Thomas THWAITES, owner of Waters Meetings Bleachworks at Astley Bridge and Sharples. Watermillock House was originally built for Mr Thomas Thwaites, head of the firm of Eden and Thwaites, bleachers. The house was still unfinished when he died on 21 October 1882 at the age of 49. He was a Conservative, being one of the first members of the Astley Bridge Local Board from 1864 -73, and again from 1877 until his death. The building of Watermillock was commenced in 1880. After his death it was completed by his executors and his son and for a time Mr. T H Thwaites lived there.
