Sampson Mordan, London 1885
Photo 1 of 15
A good Victorian silver Vesta Case of rectangular form with sprung double hinged opening mechanism and silver gilt interior. The face enameled with four maritime signal flags, the reverse engraved and enameled with the initials 'W.H.F.'
A further enamel burgee to the side.
By Sampson Mordan, London, 1885
According to the International Code of Signal Flags set up in 1855 (subsequently modified), the four flags to the front of the case represent the letters - 'D,L,S & C'. This combination of letters spells out the words - "Too Old".
The blue and white enamel swallow tailed burgee to the side is probably the private flag of the owner - 'W.H.F.'
Sold - £850.00
Condition
In good original condition with just a flake to the blue enamel flag at the top and minor losses to the enamel initials on the reverse.
