A rare Victorian novelty Propelling Pencil made from 18 carat gold in the form of a percussion Pistol, the trigger guard sliding along the barrel to extend the pencil stamped to one side; S. Mordan and July 6th 1840 to the other.
It is likely that these percussion pistols were made to commemorate an assassination attempt on Queen Victoria, by one Edward Oxford, who was tried for high treason at the Old Bailey on July 6th 1840, but was acquitted on the grounds of insanity and sent to Bethlehem Hospital
