Rare George III Silver Wine Label 'Hermitage'

Andrew Fogelberg & Stephen Gilbert, London c1790
Photo 1 of 9

A rare and interesting George III silver Wine Label of rectangular form with bright-cut and prick-dot engraved border, incised for HERMITAGE.

By Andrew Fogelberg & Stephen Gilbert, London, c1780 (makers mark only struck three times).

Provenance: The Pratt Collection, bequeathed to Harvey's Wine Museum and then sold by Bonhams, New Bond Street, Wednesday 1st October 2003, Lot 448.

As far as I am aware, this is the only known Wine Label by the highly respected silver hollowware makers Fogelberg & Gilbert. Folgelberg was the master to the young Paul Storr, although the lack of a duty mark on the label probably pre-dates his arrival.

Fogelberg & Gilbert are not known Wine Label makers, and it is possible that this Label has been cut from a larger piece of silver, but I don't think that this diminishes the interest.
