Previously Unrecorded George II Cast Silver "Two Putti" Wine Label 'White'
An extremely rare and previously unrecorded George II heavy cast silver Wine Label of "two putti" form, depicting two naked boys, one leaning against a jug and holding a cup, the other holding a bunch of grapes above a cup, both supporting a scroll shaped name panel pierced for White, a horned Bacchus mask below.
By Sandilands Drinkwater, London c1734-1739 (First mark with pre 1739 Lion Passant).
Drinkwater registered his first mark on 20th January 1734/5. His first mark - 'S * D' in a spectacle or bat shaped punch is rarely encountered.
It is generally accepted that Sandilands Drinkwater (or possibly John Harvey) was the originator of the ubiquitous "Two Putti" design, and it represents one of the earliest recorded silver Wine Label shapes, however this particular example exhibits several differences to those previously recorded and it may well be the original or a prototype for a design that endured into the 19th century.
