George IV Antique Silver "Singing Foxes" Wine Label 'Port'

Charles Rawlings, London 1827
Photo 1 of 10

A rare George IV die-stamped silver Wine Label of shaped and pierced rectangular form, with vine leaves and grapes above the shaped name panel incised for Port. Scrolled acanthus leaves and two seated foxes with mouths agape to either side.

This design is known by collectors as the ""Singing Foxes"" but actually they are more probably looking longingly up at the grapes above their heads and the design is taken directly from Aesop's fable of the Fox and the Grapes.

By Charles Rawlings, London, 1827.
