Derby Openwork Basket

An exceptional oval pierced Openwork Basket with wavy rim and applied moulded flowers on the outside of the intersections. The double twist rope-like handles have clusters of applied flowers and blue leaves at their terminals. Carefully painted in pale and deeper tones of blue with a Chinese island scene including rocks, trees and a pavilion partly obscured by a dense tree situated in a fenced garden with coastline and hills in the background. A further secondary island supports a large rock and hillside behind which the roof of a second pavilion is seen. The whole scene is enclosed within an oval line. The strands of basket work are decorated with five blue lines. The junctions of the strands on the exterior are applied with blue petalled flowers painted in deep blue.
