A good Charles II West Country silver gilt Trefid Spoon, the generous oval bowl stamped with the Taunton town mark. The terminal with pricked engraved initials M I over I T and dated 1680.

Thomas Dare Junior of Taunton, became involved with anti-catholic movement under the Earl of Shaftsbury. He was fined £500 and imprisoned at Somerset assizes in 1680. He escaped to Holland where he became Paymaster General to the Duke of Monmouth. In 1685 - during the Monmouth rebellion, he was killed in Lyme Regis in a brawl while attempting to retrieve his stolen horse.
