George IV Silver Gilt Boar Hunting Snuff Box

James William Garland, London 1828
Photo 1 of 9

A very fine quality George IV silver gilt Table Snuff Box, the lid depicting an Indian boar hunting scene in high relief, the base and sides with engine turned decoration. The box engraved around the rim: ""Presented June 23rd 1829 to Capt. Saml Price, R.N., by the young Gentlemen of H.M.S. Trincalo as a testimony of their high regard"" and inside the lid the presenters' names are engraved: ""H. Mann, N. Pipon, H. Davies, W. White, I. Hutchins, G. Pritchett, R.Martin, R.A. Godson"". Trincalo would seem to be an engraver's misspelling for H.M.S. Trinculo, a 16 gun sloop launched in 1809. A Naval General Service Medal with clasp for Basque Roads 1809 named to Midshipman Samuel Price was sold in London by Spink in 2005 and he (1793-1852) appears to have been the same officer as the recipient of this box. Price was not promoted to Captain until 1831 but, although only a Commander at the time of the presentation he may have been an acting captain or referred to as Captain by his midshipmen as he was commanding their ship.

By James William Garland, London, 1828. A scarce maker of Snuff Boxes, Garland is listed in Grimwade as a gold worker.
